FLEXION OF METATARSOPHALANGEAL JOINTS

Backlying, ankle in midposition between plantar and dorsiflexion.
Stabilize metatarsals.
Patients flexes lateral 4 toes at the Metatarsophalangeal joints, keeping interphalangeal joints extended.  Resistance is given on the plantar surface of the proximal row of phalanges for grades of Normal and Good . Extension of the middle and distal interphalangeal joints with the metacarpophalangeal joints in flexion should be tested concurrently.
Extension of  these joints is part of the primary action of the Lumbricales as in the hand.
Resistance also should be given to each toe separately as Lumbricales are uneven in strength and have divided innervation.
Range of motion is completed for a Fair grade a partial range for poor.
